Do publishing houses for novice writers exist? How are they different from the others? How to find a publisher in India? And is it legitimate, within the publishing world, to make this differentiation?
Publishing houses for beginners: be
careful
The first commandment that the
beginner must learn - by heart - when he starts looking for a publishing house:
be careful. You can find it in our article dedicated to the characteristics that beginners should possess.
When writing a book it is obvious,
normal, and natural to think about publishing it. Yes sure. But there are many
factors to be analyzed calmly.
A good publishing house: check these
characteristics
· The publisher in question should, first of all, configure itself as a full-fledged publisher with an ISBN (International Serial Book Number) identifying it. Do you know that number that you find near the low code and the cover price? Here, that must contain a code that refers to the publisher who is therefore identified.
· The presence of a catalog is another essential element: the publishing house may be young and therefore not yet have entered a large number of titles in the catalog but keep as a parameter the fact that at least 4-5 titles a year should publish them.
· A cultural project- Publishing houses have an important mission: to spread culture. Aspect to be evaluated because a real cultural project cannot be missing. On the site, you should find the purpose that the publishing house proposes, a sort of manifesto in which it declares its cultural nature.
·
Not for a fee- The publishing house is a
company in all respects and as such must be able to support itself with its
means. You are not customers, you are professionals who "sell" and do
not "buy" their work. This would be a full-fledged sale and not an
editorial contract. But it is also a question of self-love and defense of a
precious and creative work like that of the writer.
